Italy's Court Icon Nicola Pietrangeli Passes Away at the Age of 92

The world of tennis says goodbye to a authentic pioneer: Nicola Pietrangeli, a double French Open champion, has died at 92.

He carved his legacy by emerging as the pioneering Italian to secure a Grand Slam singles title, securing his first triumph at the French Open in 1959 and retaining the coveted trophy a year later.

With a remarkable 48 career titles, Pietrangeli was long held to be the nation's greatest ever player prior to the advent of current world number two and four-times major winner Jannik Sinner.

"The sport in Italy is mourning an titan. Nicola Pietrangeli, the sole Italian inducted in the International Tennis Hall of Fame, has died," announced the national federation.

Beyond his two French Open triumphs, Pietrangeli also reached the final in Paris in both 1961 and 1964.

He boasts a record 164 matches played for Italy in the prestigious team competition, winning 120 of them, and spearheaded his country to its first title in 1976.

Organisers of the Italian Open, where he was a two-time winner, commented: "It is with deep sadness that we say goodbye to Nicola Pietrangeli, a veritable legend of Italian tennis..."
