The New Mayor Vows a 'New Era' for New York City in First Address
In a first day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” America's largest city, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious beginning to his term.
An Unprecedented Figure
The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.
“A opportunity of this kind comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.
Rejecting suggestions to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will govern boldly and broadly.”
Steering by Democratic Socialist Ideals
Mamdani explicitly affirmed his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my principles for fear of being called radical,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.
The inauguration was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over the status quo.
An Ambitious Policy Agenda
Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

- Fare-free public buses
- A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
- A experiment of municipally-operated grocery stores
The projected $10 billion cost of these initiatives may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the richest residents and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past tweets.
Mamdani has moved to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, citing record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.
As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his address with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
