The Reason this DNC Refuses to Release its 2024 Election Autopsy: A Deep Dive.

This move from the DNC to suppress the publication of its internal post-election analysis concerning the 2024 election appears shocking but not surprising. Averse to unpleasant candor, the DNC often functions closer to a communications shop than a political organization focused on cultivating local power to secure victories.

A Climate Resistant to Internal Critique

Unwilling to depart from the prevailing attitude of conformity, the DNC has stayed under that legacy all through this past year. Making public the findings could have demonstrated that party leaders are interested to encourage honest conversation regarding the missteps that enabled Donald Trump to become president again. However, the leadership is moving forward as if there is little to glean from the tragic debacle from the last cycle.

Our guiding principle: does this help us win? If the answer is no, it becomes a sideline issue from what truly matters," an explanation which was presented for withholding the report.

Major Failures an Analysis Would Have Addressed

An autopsy report of substance would not dodge certain uncomfortable matters. These include:

  • Electoral Disenchantment: Losing among a significant portion of the electorate who supported the party's candidate in 2020 was decisive in the close 2024 election.
  • A Choice to Run: The unwavering decision by a party leader to stay in the race, coupled with a last-minute withdrawal, is seen by some as robbing Democratic voters of open primaries.
  • Losing Touch With the Working-Class Base: During a time of inflation, the electoral effort allegedly bowing to corporate donors' interests and not managing to confront the role of big business.
  • A Foreign Policy Effect: An unwillingness to shift an approach regarding a major international conflict allegedly caused losing many voters, particularly with young people, Arab-Americans, and Muslim Americans.
  • Losing Youth Support: Polling data demonstrates a significant drop-off in votes for the candidate among voters aged 18-29.

A Pattern of Evasion

The decision to withhold aligns with a pattern to avoid uncomfortable facts. It echoes a dynamic in which the vast majority of elected Democrat in Congress supported a sitting president's determination to seeking another term right up until a poor public debate performance led to an exit.

At the same time, overwhelming numbers of Democratic voters had been repeatedly informing pollsters that they did not want the incumbent to run again.

Campaign Spending Concerns

An honest report might also probe questions regarding campaign spending, such as the amounts were directed to party strategists as well as ad buyers over the course of a campaign that managed to spend an enormous amount during the general election.

A Larger Problem

Ultimately, the suppression of the official autopsy is symptomatic of a deference to party leaders that oversaw a losing national race. The implication for the party's base – which includes millions of loyal volunteers – is that they cannot be trusted to see the lessons the insiders have learned from hundreds of interviews compiled from conversations with insiders.

A political entity unwilling to publicly examine where it went wrong is unlikely to climb out of the cycle which was so advantageous to their opponents.
