Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes made those words in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes against Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, following the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation after his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
